The Tula Foundation is tremendously proud of the world-class journalism that the Hakai Magazine has produced over the past decade. Writers, editors and other team members have been recognized with multiple national and international awards for science journalism and overall publishing quality, and have raised the bar in covering issues related to coastal science and society.
Unfortunately, in light of budgetary considerations, the Tula Foundation has had to withdraw from publishing science journalism. The foundation will continue to focus on the Hakai Institute’s research efforts in the realms of coastal biodiversity and climate change, as well as the work of TulaSalud on improving women’s health outcomes in Guatemala.
The magazine team is committed to finding a new outlet where they can continue to publish stories with their signature keen insight into all things coastal and oceanic, and are actively looking for new funding sources. The Tula Foundation wishes them every success in this endeavor.
Although the Foundation will no longer be publishing new content on the magazine website after 2024, the Tula Foundation will support and maintain it as a free public archive, where its legacy of outstanding feature journalism will be available to everyone.
